GATI

In collaboration with several area studies centers and the Women and International Development (WID) program, the Center for Advanced Study of Internatinal Development (CASID) provides support for the Global and Area Thematic Initiative (GATI). GATI provides funding to MSU faculty to develop thematically focused, multidisciplinary interest groups that will pursue innovative curricular and research activities related to the current dynamics of globalization. Started in 1998, GATI supports the start-up and consolidation of such groups to expand MSU's prominence in international studies. GATI has drawn faculty and students from a broad array of disciplines and colleges, including many who have not traditionally held international research interests.

GATI supports a wide variety of projects falling within five core areas:

  1. International Trade and the Global Economy
  2. Environment, Resource Management, and Sustainability
  3. Democratization, Rights, and Conflict
  4. International Health and Education Disparities
  5. Cultures and identities in a Global Context
