In-service and teacher training seminars

Center for Advanced Study of International Development (CASID), drawing on the resources available at a major research university, works with school districts and individual schools to offer on-demand teacher training and in-service seminars that are informed by the Michigan State Social Studies Curriculum Benchmarks.

The CASID core and consulting faculty are drawn from all departments across the university. We have specialists in every geographic region and in a variety of thematic topics related to international issues. CASID can access this network of scholars in order to assemble discussion panels, training sessions and individual presenters within our varied areas of expertise.

Possible in-service and seminar topics include:

  • The history, culture and current situation of a particular country or region
  • Global economic issues; child labor, the green revolution, challenges of industrialization, etc.
  • Gender and globalization; how does the process of globalization affect the women and men of different regions and cultures
  • Society and the environment
  • Challenges of democratization in the developing world
  • The spread and impact of infectious diseases
  • The major religions of the world

This is a partial, and by no means exhaustive, list of some areas in which we could provide content. Districts and individual schools are welcome to suggest additional topics and themes and we would try to accommodate them. If we are unable to provide an expert on the topic requested, we will work with that school to find an acceptable substitute.
